Naikan neighbor, the legendary Hollywood restaurant, Yamashiro (meaning “Mountain Palace”), was the dream of the Bernheimer brothers who wanted to build a private estate to house their vast and priceless collection of Asian art. Their dream finally became a reality in 1914. Hundreds of skilled craftsman were brought over from the Orient to create this resplendent teak and cedar mansion with carved rafters lacquered in gold, exotic gardens with over 30,000 varieties of trees and shrubs, waterfalls, a miniature Japanese village with miniature bronze houseboats floating on tiny canals, and even a private zoo.

The Naikan House was originally built as a temple for the Yamashiro craftsmen who made the Bernheimer brothers dreams come to life. You will feel a sense of calm and peacefulness the instant you step through the gate. This is intrinsic to The Naikan House as part of its rich history. Dreams do come true.

Today, the fully-furnished Naikan House retains strong Asian influences in both architecture and character, yet is also very much at home in the 21st century with high-tech innovation.
